The Richmond Strikers win approval for
fields at Markel property at West Creek!

It is our pleasure to announce that last night (Nov. 7) the Goochland County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to approve the conditional use permit for the Strikers to build fields at West Creek on 38 acres of Markel Corporation’s property. This was the final approval needed to get the project rolling! Many thanks go to the supervisors, planning commission, the planning staff, as well as to the countless Striker families who attended one or more of the numerous meetings out in Goochland.

Markel Corporation is generously leasing the Strikers the land which is right off Route 288 - land that was once slated to be home to Motorola’s chip plant. “This land is perfect for soccer fields and already has ample paved parking lots, easy access, water and sewer hook-ups and wide open space,” stated Scott Turner, executive director for the Strikers. “We are also really pleased to be able to replace some of the fields we are losing at Cosby this month,” he said. “Also, several great local companies have voiced an interest in helping us with this project, but the cost will still be significant. We anticipate a club-wide fundraising campaign will raise the needed capital to make this project a reality,” stated Turner. The Strikers haven’t conducted a fundraising campaign since the development of Striker park years ago and numerous field improvements, goal replacements, parking lot improvements, and building repairs have been made in the last 2 years keeping the Richmond Strikers facilities on par with the top clubs in the country.

With the help of good corporate citizens like Markel Corporation, Hourigan Construction and Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc (VHB) and their professional expertise, the development process will be done right! Bids for the job will be going out in the very near future and if all goes according to plan, by fall of 2008 the Strikers will have 8 irrigated fields at West Creek Office Park.

Regular web updates on the project will be provided and stay tuned for our ground breaking ceremony!
