Markel
Fields are under Construction.
Big Celebration well attended!
On February 29th over 100 people
gathered to celebrate the
groundbreaking at the Richmond
Strikers' new Markel Fields at
West Creek in Goochland County.
Congressman Eric Cantor spoke to
the group recounting his days as
a soccer coach for the Strikers
and his fond memories during the
years his children played the
sport. Also speaking was Lynne
Blain, current chairman of the
Strikers, Bruce Kay, Vice
President for Markel Corporation
and Jim Eads, a supervisor for
Goochland County. After remarks,
the entire group stepped outside
the tent and watched as the
ceremonial shovels were dug into
the ground. By August 2008 the 8
new Bermuda grass fields will be
ready for the beginning of the
fall recreation season just in
time to replace the Cosby
fields. The price tag for the
new fields is upwards of $1
million and the Strikers plan to
kick off a capital campaign to
help offset the costs.
