The Richmond Strikers Soccer Club is pleased to announce that Matthew Kirkpatrick will be joining the club as the Assistant Director of Coaching. Kirkpatrick, a Richmond resident for over eight years, comes to the Strikers from Longwood University where he held the position of Men’s Assistant Coach.

Kirkpatrick, born and raised in Sheffield, England, signed with Sheffield Wednesday FC at the age of fourteen. He played for his boyhood team until 1996 signing a YTS contract along the way. After being released by “Wednesday”, Kirkpatrick came over to the US to pursue his soccer career and to further his education. After winning the NJCAA National Championship with Yavapai College (AZ) in 1997, Kirkpatrick transferred to Virginia Commonwealth University. Kirkpatrick graduated from VCU in 2000 and then played one season in the A league with the San Francisco Bay Area Seals.

After a brief stint in the professional game back in England, Kirkpatrick returned to Richmond and began coaching for the Richmond Strikers. Over the years, Kirkpatrick has been heavily involved in the Richmond soccer community working as a sports director at the Chester YMCA and assisting other local soccer clubs with training and camps.

Kirkpatrick recently helped Longwood University to achieve its two best seasons ever in its recent transition to NCAA division I.   Kirkpatrick holds his FA preliminary coaching badge and is actively pursuing his US licenses.

Matt resides in the Fan District of Richmond with his wife Adrienne and three children Quinn, Charlie and Brodie.
