
The
Richmond Strikers Soccer Club is pleased to announce
that Matthew Kirkpatrick will be joining the club
as the Assistant Director of Coaching.
Kirkpatrick, a Richmond resident for over eight years,
comes to the Strikers from Longwood University where he
held the position of Men’s Assistant Coach.
Kirkpatrick, born and raised in Sheffield, England,
signed with Sheffield Wednesday FC at the age of
fourteen. He played for his boyhood team until 1996
signing a YTS contract along the way. After being
released by “Wednesday”, Kirkpatrick came over to the US
to pursue his soccer career and to further his
education. After winning the NJCAA National Championship
with Yavapai College (AZ) in 1997, Kirkpatrick
transferred to Virginia Commonwealth University.
Kirkpatrick graduated from VCU in 2000 and then
played one season in the A league with the San Francisco
Bay Area Seals.
After a brief stint in the professional game back in
England, Kirkpatrick returned to Richmond and
began coaching for the Richmond Strikers. Over the
years, Kirkpatrick has been heavily involved in the
Richmond soccer community working as a sports director
at the Chester YMCA and assisting other local soccer
clubs with training and camps.
Kirkpatrick recently helped Longwood University to
achieve its two best seasons ever in its recent
transition to NCAA division I.
Kirkpatrick holds his FA preliminary coaching badge
and is actively pursuing his US licenses.
Matt resides in the Fan District of Richmond with
his wife Adrienne and three children Quinn, Charlie and
Brodie.
